Having a kidney transplant is often the last conduit effort to save the life of a person whose kidneys have botched and no longer process waste goods in the body. Statistics disclose that a total of around 9,000 kidney transplants befall every year from cadavers and around 3,000 transplants arise from living related donors. Living unrelated donors make up 9,000 transplants every year. Sadly, there are more than 56,000 folks waiting for kidney transplants at any given time.
The first efficacious kidney transplant was done in 1954 in both Boston and Paris. These were kidney transplants done between identical twins which don't have complications with rejection. The principal issue was tissue typing--finding an appropriate match for the receiver and making certain that rejection is kept to a minimum. This is why lots of donors are kinsfolks who are a good match or living donors who are a decent tissue typing match for the receiver. Living donors are cautiously assessed to ensure that they are medically and psychologically able to donate their kidneys for stem cell kidney transplant. The living donor transplant used to be done through an open process but it is now increasingly done via laparoscopic surgery, which is easier to put up with. Kidneys from living donors have an improved success rate than do kidneys from dead donors. Kidney transplant from dead donors can come from those whose hearts are still beating but are brain deceased and also from non-heart beating donors.
